Improving Your Position
Ken Hedberg, President of DSO Board of Directors
Seasons greeting to my fellow member-owners of DSO. As we are now in the midst of the holiday season, my wish is that this finds you all well, warm, and full of hope and gratitude.
This past summer, I joined some of my fellow DSO directors at director training sessions in Overland Park. One of our sessions was leadership training, led by Navy Seal Rorke Denver. One of his challenges to us was to always look to improve your position. Aside from the obvious reference to battlefield position, he related how position in life is also a balance between risk and opportunity, recognizing that standing still generally does not bring satisfaction and can result in a negative outcome. This was thought-provoking in many ways, but I want to relate it to our upcoming director elections at DSO.
DSO director elections will be held in April 2023, but the nomination process starts in December. What better way to challenge yourself and look to improve your position, and help better the cooperative? Please consider the following director positions that will be up for election in 2023:
- East District – includes all territory east of Highway K-15 and David Mueller is the current director in Position #3. David is eligible for another three-year term and plans to run again.
- West District – include all territory west of I-135/U.S. Highway 81 and Ken Berry is the current director in Position #3. Ken is eligible for another three-year term and plans to run again.
- Central District – includes all territory between the East and West districts and Bruce Spare is the current director in Position #3. Bruce is eligible for another three-year term and plans to run again.
Keep in mind that directors must reside within the DSO territory they represent.
All potential and current directors must complete the nomination process of obtaining member signatures on a petition to be placed on the official ballot, as determined by DSO’s elections committee. Petition packets are available at the DSO Office in Solomon or on the website at dsoelectric.com and must be completed and returned by the date shown in the packets.
Directors are active community members who set policies and make important governance decisions at DSO. They are expected to attend meetings and training sessions to become knowledgeable about the industry and are compensated for their time and expenses. If you consider running for a director position and have questions, then please contact the DSO office or any current director (contact information is on the DSO website under About Us/Directors and Consultants).
A position on the DSO board offers many travel and educational opportunities through DSO’s national trade association training and education courses. Directors are expected to attend and work towards director certification to become knowledgeable about the industry and are compensated for their time and expenses. I challenge you to consider running to serve as a director and “improve your position.”
This message fulfills the board policy to inform consumer-members which director positions are up for election and whether the current director is eligible and plans to run.
